What is a cookie?

A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your device when accessing certain websites. Cookies allow a website to store and retrieve information on the browsing habits of users or their computers, among other things and, depending on the information they contain and the way in which they use their computers, cookies can be used to recognise users.

Types of cookies

  • Technical cookies: these allow the user to browse through a website, platform or application and use the different options or services contained on it, such as controlling data traffic and communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted access parts, remembering the elements that make up an order, carrying out the purchasing process of an order, making a request to sign up for or take part in an event, using security elements while browsing, storing content for the sharing of videos or sound, or sharing content via social media.
  • Customisation cookies: these allow the user to access the service with some general features that are predefined according to a set of criteria on the user's device, such as language and the type of browser through which the service is accessed, the regional configuration used to access the service, etc.
  • Analytical cookies: these make it possible to quantify the number of users and measure and statistically analyse the browsing that is carried out, with the aim of improving the services that are available. They can be own or third party cookies.

Duration of cookies

  • Session cookies: they collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are often used to store information that is only useful for the provision of the service requested on a single occasion (e.g. a list of products in a shopping cart).
  • Persistent cookies: the data continue to be stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a defined period by the cookie owner, which can range from a few minutes to several years.

Types of cookies by manager

Depending on who manages the computer or domain from which cookies are sent and how the data obtained is processed, there are two types:

  • Own cookies: these are managed by the Bizkaia Provincial Council.
  • Third-party cookies: these are managed by another entity that processes the data obtained through cookies.
