  • STAGE 18: BAÑOS DE MOLINAR - LANESTOSA

The stage begins in an anodyne fashion over the river Karranza and ascending along paths and country lanes. Soon the impressive views of the Hornijo mountain range and its steep rock walls appear. Beautiful paths through forests of holm oak and beech trees, so rare nowadays, give a clean air to these trails that run through old caves and abandoned mines. Soon the route takes us to the beautiful village of Lanestosa where we start the GR 123 route. The richest way of getting to know Bizkaia from the inside and the ritual of walking and breathing its natural and cultural landscape mosaic.

  • STAGE 17: TRUZIOS/TRUCIOS - BAÑOS DE MOLINAR

This is a moderate stage due to its regularity in which we walk past the river Agüera in places such as Armañon and the whole Karranza Valley; the Somocueto neighbourhood, the Pozalagua caves, the karst massif of Los Jorrios. Walking along the ridge that surrounds the valley on its south-western slope. It is normal that we highlight the prehistoric remains and the unique stalactites in the caves, which were once used for mining iron ore and are now visited by tourists who are eager to discover a region that is different from the rest of Bizkaia.

  • STAGE 16: MUSKIZ - TRUZIOS/TRUCIOS

A real transition from the extreme urban environment from which we started in Muskiz to fully enter a purely rural, natural and leafy landscape in which pasture meadows and the small mountain peaks, Mello and Ventoso, of the valleys of the Cantabrian coast coexist; a beautiful stage that runs along the border between Bizkaia and Cantabria.

  • STAGE 15: PORTUGALETE - MUSKIZ

It is undoubtedly a surprising stage; how, being a predominantly urban and even industrial place, it can keep a walking route so rich in trails and spectacular panoramic views over the big city but surrounded by a tamed and present nature. The Serantes viewpoint and the "might" of Punta Lucero make this stage a pleasant transit through a place that at first sight seemed hard to walk. Pure history of Gran Bilbao with the frictions of its different localities. Hiking also has the virtue of bringing the urban closer to the path.

  • STAGE 14: PLENTZIA - AREETA

Eminent coastal stage that begins by the impressive cliffs and already announces the big city. Before we will enjoy walking through Barrika, Sopela with its sandy beaches and paths through the woods. A region, Uribe, with a great agricultural tradition, with its particular green wine, Txakoli, standing out; a region that adds to the commercial influence and new industry of Bilbao. Areeta (Las Arenas), in Getxo, allows us to contemplate times of bonanza and the hanging bridge on the left bank... a real experience if we are attentive to its urban hustle and bustle.

  • STAGE 13: BAKIO - PLENTZIA

Clearly differentiated into two parts: the first ascending to San Miguel and then to Mount Jata from where we will enjoy magnificent views; a toboggan that requires legs but without difficulty that compensates in landscape. The second part is more relaxed and follows paths with regular slopes that take us to the small and particular coastal town of Armintza to continue gently to the beach of Gorliz... a reward for the effort made at the beginning of the hike.

  • STAGE 12: SUKARRIETA - BAKIO

A simple stage that runs along paved paths and pleasant walking tracks, constantly accompanied by the magnificent view of Urdaibai at the beginning, passing through the exquisite Mundaka, the old Bermeo, continuing on to the mid-slopes and gradually descending towards Bakio, which offers the hiker the sea horizon once again. A coastline that we enjoy from the heights and without the hustle and bustle of the tourist traffic that, on occasions, causes the coastal demand with San Juan de Gaztelugatxe at the head, a very attractive place to visit.

  • STAGE 11BIS: LAIDA - SUKARRIETA

The scenic beauty of the Urdaibai basin-estuary and its natural wealth justify its status as a Biosphere Reserve. It is a real pleasure for hikers to have the opportunity to walk through the marshes and to explore the string of small rural villages that know how to take care of their ecological value without renouncing an active life full of cultural activity. Kanala, Kortezubi on the right bank or Busturia and Sukarrieta on the left bank are some of the many beautiful spots along this route.

  • STAGE 11: ISPASTER - LAIDA

Small rural municipalities on the coast of Bizkaia, a peculiar landscape that combines in a delicate balance the agricultural and livestock tradition with the obvious uses of a quiet tourism. Mountains and forestry plantations accompany the path with such bucolic landmarks as Ea, with its small natural and cultural treasures; Angelutxu, Natxitua, Elantxobe, Ibarrangelu..... The hill of San Pedro de Atxarre, a short detour that will leave an unforgettable panoramic view for the hiker (obligatory), is undoubtedly worth mentioning. The Laida sandy area, with its rough waves, opens up the horizon to the immensity of the sea.

  • STAGE 10: ONDARROA - ISPASTER

This stage could be called refreshing despite its demanding distance. It starts with a steep slope in the old town of Ondarroa, which makes it easier to walk calmly through leafy woodland and eucalyptus groves. Asterrika, Mendexa, the Camino Real, the spectacular stretch along the Lea River and the indescribable arrival in Lekeitio next to the tide mill is simply overwhelming. Lekeitio, a tourist town par excellence since the 19th century, a visit to Garraitz Island, a walk to the Santa Katalina lighthouse, a climb to Mount Otoio and a descent to Ispaster... a truly luxurious and unrepeatable stage.

  • STAGE 9: ERMUA - ONDARROA

Possibly the most undeservedly unknown stage; for the first time we will see the coast of Bizkaia from the hillsides that lead us on a pleasant walk through forests and along rural paths. Mount Kalamua and the limestone surroundings of Arnoate mark the route, which gradually drops in altitude until we reach the port town of Ondarroa, an excellent end to a day's walking.

  • STAGE 8: ELORRIO - ERMUA

Divided into two clear sections, the first ascending and the second descending (in the territory of Elgeta is the change of slope), this stage constantly shows us the splendid Anboto mountain range and its smaller peaks that close off the Durangaldea region to the south. Along lanes, paths and some paved connections we head towards the northern slope where it ends in the medieval town of Ermua.

  • STAGE 7: UBIDE - ELORRIO

It is difficult to summarise all the charm of this stage; the landscapes through which it passes are simply spectacular, among which the Anboto stands out for its colossal figure; Besaide for its strategic location linking Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa and the welcoming and overwhelming town of Elorrio with its elegant and magnificently preserved architecture; nobility of stone and centuries of memory.

  • STAGE 6: OROZKO - UBIDE

A picturesque stage both in the village of origin, Orozko, and at its destination, Ubide. It is certainly long, you have to take it easy and at times it is a bit demanding, but it is very entertaining due to its variety of landscapes among authentic hundred-year-old beech forests, exotic conifers, bridle paths, hills and nearby peaks that impress with their sharp karst walls. Kurtzegain, Itxina, Kolometa, Aldamiñape, are some of the place names that we will find along the route... all places that conserve their ancestral wooded landscape. The last track next to the river Undebe takes us to Ubide.

  • STAGE 5: LAUDIO - OROZKO

We leave Araba and industrial Laudio to enter deep Bizkaia through centenary beech forests, old cart tracks and areas of livestock and forestry tradition. Orozko is a municipality that has maintained its rural tradition and its natural landscapes with the harmony that means the evolution towards new activities, being a living town.

  • STAGE 4: GORDEXOLA - LAUDIO

Straddling the border between Bizkaia and Araba, the old Zubiete road leads to the Kipuetxe and Gallarraga hills and continues along the slopes of Ganekogorta on a narrow path that is very pleasant to walk on and with a level curve. Other paths and a restored bunker of the "Bilbao iron belt" announce the last descent to the industrial town of Laudio.

  • STAGE 3: BALMASEDA - GORDEXOLA

We set off from the medieval town of Balmaseda to walk along the border of Burgos through the Trasmosomos mountain range with a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains. Mixed forests and forest plantations create a colourful plant mosaic. Descend to the river Ayega and along the fresh riverbank until we reach another river, the Herrerías, which will show us the particular palaces and Indian villas that are so characteristic of the town of Gordexola.

  • STAGE 2: LANZAS AGUDAS - BALMASEDA

From the rural landscape to the low medieval Balmaseda, this stage runs through the Ordunte mountain range from which the valleys of Carranza in Bizkaia and Mena in Burgos can be seen. The historic "Kolitza" mountain and the arrival at the emblematic town of Balmaseda enrich a day of hiking dotted with cultural heritage of which we highlight the old Gothic bridge over the Cadagua River. A visit to the history museum is a must.

  • STAGE 1: LANESTOSA - LANZAS AGUDAS

It starts in Lanestosa, one of the most remote municipalities in Bizkaia; it is very characteristic of this slope connected to Cantabria and is well worth a visit. This stage runs along the valley of the river Calera to the foot of the Zalama, which rises almost a thousand metres. Near its summit, it continues along the Ordunte range to the Carranza district of Lanzas Agudas, where it ends. This route was widely used by muleteers who traded between Burgos and the coastal towns of the Bay of Biscay.
